Joomla Day Training Program 1 May
Two half-day training course will be held on 1 May at the Southbank TAFE.
- Morning session 9:00 - 12:30 Introducing Designers to Joomla
- Afternoon session 1:30 - 5:00 Introducing Developers to Joomla
A light morning and afternoon tea is provided in each session. Lunch is not included but several food outlets are available near the venue.

The training workshops are being held in Room GA03008 (see Southbank Campus Map for more information) of the Southbank Institute of Technology.
Introducing Designers to Joomla
Introducing Designers to Joomla is a short, half-day course (approximately 3.5 hours) that introduces designers to the Joomla templating system and customisation techniques.
This course is aimed at people who are already web savvy and have already designed static HTML page sites or dabbled with Joomla web site design. This course introduces the basic programmatic concepts behind how to build a Joomla template (but not about stylesheets and images). The following topics are covered during the session:
- The file structure of a Joomla template.
- How to include the head block, modules and the component in a Joomla template.
- An introduction to basic PHP syntax (the "if" statement) and some basic Joomla variables (getting information about the user that is logged in).
- The advantages of the output override system with respect to deploying sites for clients.
- Using layout overrides in components and modules.
- Using module chrome.
- Using pagination link overrides.
Time permitting (depending on questions), a brief introduction to designing a module and/or a brief introduction to the Joomla database schema may also be included.

Introducing Developers to Joomla
Introducing Developers to Joomla is a short, half-day course (approximately 3.5 hours) that introduces developers to the Joomla framework and extensions.
This course is aimed at people who are already familiar with how to set up a Joomla web site. This course introduces the programmatic concepts behind the Joomla framework and extension development. The following topics are covered during the session:
- An overview of the third-party elements of the Joomla framework.
- An overview of the Joomla developed framework.
- An overview of the extended framework (provided by JXtended) that allows for some measure of forward compatibility with Joomla 1.6.
- A brief introduction to commons developer tools (IDE's and other tools).
- Planning a Joomla component.
- Database fields that have special significance in the Joomla framework.
- The file structure of a Joomla component.
- A brief introduction to what MVC means to the Joomla developer.
- A detailed look at the administrator list view, and the item edit form.
- A brief introduction into the design of a module.
Time permitting (depending on questions), a brief introduction to the Joomla database schema may also be include.
