The October Melbourne User Group Meeting's on Wednesday 22th Wednesday 29th from 6:30pm. We've moved a week.
Sorry for the late change, but we're moving the usergroup to next Wednesday, October 29, so as to give you some time to think about the following topics for discussion.
Minutes for 29th October MJUG meeting
6:20 opened (unofficially).
Talking about Mail2Joomla, a component for Joomla 1.5 that lets you feed your Joomla with content by simple sending email.
6:45 Discussing websites using HiveMind Template
6:55 Round table introduction
(Names/attendance go here)
7:05 Melbourne Joomladay update
Saturday is for presentations
Sunday: 4 hour workshop with Andrew Eddie
Jim Stewart to host an afternoon session on Sunday also
Plan to accommodate up to 400 people.
Encourage people to register fairly early (take advantage early bird pricing)
Agenda confirmed, and now looking at sponsors so speak to Nick at artful.com.au.
7:10 Marco Bartz' Component demonstration of RokMiniNews
Techniques to attain the news feeds. -
Extended the admin area of the component to be able to get information from other databases
DB needs to be local due to security concerns and uses Joomla DB framework to access databases. therefore, if Joomla can access Oracle, then RMN can access Oracle also... (keeping footprint congruent with Joomla)The "Presentation" of RMN is somewhat bound to the TerrannTribune template (RocketTheme) for now. Demonstrated how it breaks with the default Joomla template.
Time taken was 5 to 6 hours. took a while to build the URLs code, was tricky with SEF due to URLs potentially being different on feeder sites.
Suggest not to modify core code of Joomla when building components/modules, as it severely limits the update and upgrade path.
7:35 Peter Nurse's PHP demonstration to build a component called Generic table Viewer.
Observed a lot of hard coding to become a PHP editor.
Set out to build a generic tables component, to insert, update, delete generic data.
The tables can be configured to be either editable, new entries etc.
In a table, fields can be named and enabled/disabled, etc.
8:05 John Wood now showing 1.6
ACL is a new feature to 1.6 ACL = Access Control Lists
Basically enables areas to be "off limits" to certain users...
Also showed how URLs can be "hidden" for security purposes.
8:25 Also showed a component called "Filler" - it populates a menu for you without having to create an article first. http://jxextended.com
8:30 Question time.
- Michael's going to be showing us how he has created a component that allows news feeds and other data to be pulled from several joomla databases and then displayed. Matthias has now used this on the Deutsch in Melbourne & Perth sites to provide a national feed that updates from each of the network of sites, without having to copy the items to each site.
- Joomladay 2009 planning's now cruising along with the final details for the program and location being close to ready next week. For your diaries, February 7/8 is the weekend for Joomladay Melbourne 2009, with a full day programmed on February 7, and special workshop sessions being held on the Sunday. More details will be on the site at http://melbourne.joomladay.org.au soon.
- For one of the sessions we'll be putting on during the Joomladay, we need the JMUG's help. We want to know your Favourite and Essential Joomla Extensions. So on Wednesday, come along and we'll be discussing the list to see what people use - bring your notepads too as you might find there's some you've not considered in the list.
We're also after a design for the Melbourne JoomlaDay 2009 logo. It will be used on promoting the event, so needs to be able to be used in landscape, portrait, DL, A4 and other formats as required. For more details, check out the forum
Discuss the evening in the forum.
